Another Great Auction from Doncaster Auction Centre, including Jewellery, Collectibles, Vintage, Retro, A Real Eclectic Mix
A JB Hirsch J. Ruhl Design figural single bookend, depicting an elderly man, often referred to as a ‘Librarian’ or ‘Scholar’, engrossed in reading a book. The statuette features a main body, comprising the figure and armchair, crafted from cast metal, likely spelter or another alloy, with an applied antique bronzed finish. It is mounted on a polished, yellowish-tan marble or alabaster base. Distinctly, the man’s face and hair are fashioned from a separate material, identified as celluloid, which was a common material for these figures. The reverse of the chair bears the markings ‘J.B.H. Co.’, a circular maker’s mark, and ‘J. RUHL’, indicating the manufacturer and designer respectively.
