A Zambian Makishi ceremonial mask, an elongated, anthropomorphic form featuring a tall, tiered conical headdress surmounting a distinct facial section. The piece is constructed from wrapped or woven fibers, potentially over a carved wooden form, and extensively decorated with geometric patterns of interlocking triangles and lines in contrasting dark brown, white, and a reddish-brown base. The facial features include large, circular eyes with prominent pupils, a long, slender, raised white nose, and an open mouth with visible white ‘teeth’. Additional embellishments include bands of white dots on a dark ground around the eyes and on the tiered headdress, which also features a raised white vertical element. A substantial beard crafted from light brown natural fibers, such as raffia, hangs from the lower jaw. No visible text or identifying marks are present.
