An antique 19th Century Chinese wooden Kwan rice measure bucket, also known as a ‘dou’. This small, handled wooden container is constructed from dark-stained wood panels reinforced with metal straps and fasteners. Its rustic, utilitarian-decorative style is enhanced by dark, applied or carved motifs on its sides, notably featuring the Chinese character “斗” (dǒu), which translates to “dipper” or “unit of dry measure.” Other panels display stylized figural designs.
