Another Great Auction from Doncaster Auction Centre, including Jewellery, Collectibles, Vintage, Retro, A Real Eclectic Mix
A vintage J. Salmon postcard, Series 1837, printed in England. This full-color caricatured illustration depicts two Black figures and a cat in a domestic setting, rendered in an early 20th-century cartoon style. The scene features a woman holding a patterned rug, while a man smoking a pipe stands by a fireplace. A partially visible signature “F.G. LEW.” is present. The caption beneath the illustration reads in dialect: “‘fore we married youse said you’d lay down your life for me, N____ youse wont even lay down de carpet!”, which includes a racial slur. The reverse is a standard divided postcard back, marked “COPYRIGHT. PRINTED AND PUBLISHED BY J. SALMON. SEVENOAKS. ENGLAND.”, “SALMON SERIES”, and “Printed in England.” Constructed from paper card stock.
