ANOTHER GREAT
A group of four pre-decimal British trade tokens, fabricated from brass and copper/bronze-toned metals, originating from Stratford Market. The collection comprises one ornate oval, one irregularly scalloped, and two octagonal examples. Inscriptions on the fronts include ‘T. ROBINSON MAKER,’ ‘REAS 2,’ ‘STRATFORD MKT,’ ‘EAST ANGLIAN,’ ‘BENNETT & HAWES,’ and ‘FARMERS CO-OP LTD,’ along with the number ‘W.1342.’ The reverses display pre-decimal British currency denominations of ‘6D’ (sixpence) and ‘ONE SHILLING,’ with several tokens marked ‘PERCIVAL,’ ‘PERCIVAL & CO,’ or ‘PERCIVAL BIRM.,’ indicating a probable manufacturer. These tokens were likely used as currency or credit within the Stratford Market system prior to British decimalisation in 1971.
