ANOTHER GREAT
A Japanese Satsuma lidded vase. The baluster-form body and domed lid are topped with a gilded, stylized foo dog finial. It is elaborately decorated with a vibrant palette predominantly of rich red, extensive gilding, and white reserves displaying intricate floral and foliate motifs on the lid and neck. The shoulders are adorned with two pairs of gilded dragon-like handles or lugs. The main body features a detailed figural scene depicting numerous robed figures on a white ground, accented with black, red, and gold patterns. Visible text within this scene reads “五百羅漢,” which translates to “Five Hundred Arhats” or “Five Hundred Rakan,” suggesting a Japanese cultural context.
