ANOTHER GREAT
A framed paper certificate commemorating an “Amazon Voyage” and initiation into the “Ancient Order of Shellbacks.” Dated “ninth day of August 1933,” it certifies Mr. John Kirk’s crossing of “the Line” and initiation into the Ancient Order of Shellbacks aboard the R.M.S. Hilary. The document features decorative script, an illustration of a steamship, and a scene depicting Neptune with mermaids and seahorses. It bears a red, wax-like seal inscribed “NEPTUNUS OMNI MARIS” (Neptune, ruler of all seas) and is signed by “Neptunus Rex” and “Captain C.R. Callow R.D.R.N.R. Booth Line.” The certificate is housed in a simple wooden frame with glass.
