Buyer's premium:

An Anglo-Saxon Cnut Short Cross Type Penny, dating from approximately 1016-1036 AD. This irregularly shaped, circular coin is crafted from a silver-toned metal, displaying significant tarnish and wear consistent with its age. The obverse features a crudely stylized human bust facing right, accompanied by a tree-like motif to the left and a distinctive symbol resembling an ‘S’ or a rune to the right, all enclosed within a dotted circular border. The marginal legend consists of highly stylized, largely illegible characters, appearing to be Latin script, with shapes suggestive of letters such as ‘S’, ‘T’, ‘O’, ‘D’, and ‘R’. The reverse displays a prominent central cross within a circular border, with four pellets visible in each quadrant. This is surrounded by a similarly stylized and largely illegible Latin-like marginal legend, where shapes such as ‘S’, ‘T’, ‘I’, ‘N’, ‘O’, and ‘M’ can be vaguely discerned. The strike appears somewhat uneven, but the major motifs remain clearly visible.
