Another Great Auction
An Anglo-Saxon Silver Penny, likely of King Æthelred II (The Unready). This circular, hammered silver coin exhibits an irregular flan. The obverse features a central cross within a dotted inner circle, surrounded by a fragmented Latin legend with visible letters such as ‘R’, ‘E’, ‘X’, ‘A’, ‘N’, and ‘G’, consistent with “REX ANGLORVM” (King of the English). The reverse presents a two-line central legend, with “O REDT” clearly visible on the upper line, followed by fragmented letters and dots on the lower line, indicative of a moneyer and mint. The “REDT” inscription is a key identifier for coinage of Æthelred II. The overall style, including the cross design and irregular form, points towards an Anglo-Saxon or early medieval period, likely late 10th to 11th century.
