Another Great Auction
This lot comprises two ornate desktop or altar crucifixes. Each features a dark-stained wooden cross mounted on a multi-tiered wooden base, accented with black and gilt metal elements. Both crosses are elaborately decorated with gilt-toned openwork scrolling metalwork. The left crucifix presents a gilt-toned metal figure of Christ with a radiating sunburst halo, surmounted by a banner inscribed “INRI” (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum, Latin for “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”). The right crucifix displays a silver-toned metal figure of Christ, which lacks the sunburst halo, and has a small white tag affixed to its vertical beam.
