A Carlton Ware ‘Petunia’ covered butter or cheese dish, comprising a rectangular, fluted lid with a central handle and a matching tray base. The item features a hand-painted style floral motif, depicting yellow, purple, and pink petunias with green foliage, set against a cream-to-pale yellow gradient ground. Both pieces have scalloped, fluted edges extensively highlighted with gilding. The underside of the lid is marked with a “W & R CARLTON WARE STOKE-ON-TRENT” crown and stork logo, the pattern name “PETUNIA”, and two registration numbers: “RN:258148” and “RPNº213522”.
