Another Great Auction
A late 19th Century Birmingham silver P-plated vesta case, of rectangular form, featuring a high-relief repoussé decoration on its lid depicting four winged cherubs or putti. Visible hallmarks on the side include a maker’s mark (possibly ‘JS’ or similar), an anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office, the lion passant indicating sterling silver, and a lowercase Gothic ‘b’ as a date letter, likely corresponding to 1876. It currently houses a standard wooden or cardboard matchbox, containing pink-tipped matches.
