Another Great Auction 20th November
A vintage Chinese Mahjong set, presented in a rectangular, red-painted wooden or hardboard case. The exterior of the case is decorated with gold-painted imagery of a dragon and phoenix amidst cloud motifs, and prominent Chinese characters reading “壽” (shòu – longevity) and “福” (fú – fortune/blessing), all framed by a geometric border, secured by brass-colored metal latches. Internally, the case is lined with paper printed with extensive Chinese text and traditional illustrations of landscapes and figures; visible banners read “國粹麻將文” (Guócuì Májiàng Wén), translating to “National Essence Mahjong Text” or “Mahjong: A National Treasure Document.” The set includes numerous off-white tiles, likely made from bone or an early plastic composite, intricately carved and colored with traditional Mahjong symbols in red, green, black, and blue, alongside several white dice with black pips.
