Another Great Auction 11th December
This lot presents a collection of twelve British military cap badges and insignia, crafted from various metals including brass, bronze, and silver-toned alloys, often in bi-metallic designs. The styles suggest a 20th-century period, with visible royal cyphers such as ‘GR’ and ‘GVIR’ on several pieces, indicating reigns from George V to George VI. Inscriptions and unit names include “MILITARY POLICE,” “EAST YORKSHIRE,” “WEST YORKSHIRE,” “ROYAL ENGINEERS” (bearing the Latin motto “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE,” meaning “Shame on him who thinks evil of it”), “PRINCE CONSORT’S OWN,” “ROYAL ANGLIAN,” and “THE WEST RIDING” (with the partial Latin motto “FORTUNA CAECIS OBSEQUITUR,” meaning “Fortune favors the blind”). One large circular badge also displays battle honours such as “WATERLOO,” “SOUTH AFRICA 1900-02,” and “SOMME 1916-18.”
