A pair of Art Deco bookends manufactured by Carlton Ware, identified by the pattern name ‘Athena’. Each bookend features a standing female figure crafted from glazed earthenware, hand-painted primarily in yellow, wearing a dress and hat. The figure holds a large curved object draped with a green element resembling a serpent or sash. One figure is accompanied by a small gray pedestal topped with an owl. The ceramic figures are mounted onto vertical support blocks finished in matte black with a central cream-colored stripe, consistent with the Art Deco style of the 1930s. The reverse of the ceramic elements bears the manufacturer’s mark: Carlton Ware MADE IN ENGLAND *TRADE MARK*.
