A vintage rectangular storage chest or box, commonly referred to in the market as a coal, kindling, or scuttle box. The item is constructed of embossed brass sheeting fitted over a wooden frame. The brass exterior features extensive repoussé decoration, primarily depicting nautical scenes. The hinged lid is decorated with a scene showing two large galleon-style ships separated by a rising or setting sun. The front panel features two smaller sailing vessels on rough seas. All panels are bordered by ornate floral and geometric detailing typical of late Victorian or Edwardian styles. The interior is lined with simple, unfinished wood. The lid is secured by a small brass chain.
