The set is noted on the title page as being Illustrated with upwards of 5000 Photographs, numerous Colour Plates, and 150 Maps. The volumes are uniformly bound in dark hardback cloth featuring extensive ornamental gilt stamping on the spines, which denote the titles and geographic ranges covered (e.g., Volume II: British Empire to Dahomey; Volume VI: South Africa to Wales). An internal inventory notation H.1504 is visible on the title page of Volume II.
