A pair of decorative bookends in the East Asian/Chinese folk art style. Each bookend consists of a deeply carved upright support, likely constructed from wood or a resin composite imitating wood, affixed to a U-shaped pivoting metal base plate, likely brass or bronze. The upright supports are executed in high relief, depicting elaborate landscape scenes. These scenes include tiered pagodas, stylized trees and foliage, and groups of robed figures (four figures visible on the face of each support). The carvings feature a pronounced faux patina utilizing dark brown and oxidized green-bronze tones to enhance the relief. The inner faces of the uprights incorporate perforated openwork designs. The web intelligence confirms these items are consistent with antique Chinese hand-carved folk art bookends.
