A Victorian extending self-closing book slide constructed from wood veneered in highly figured Coromandel wood, set upon a dark ebonized base. The mechanism is heavily mounted with ornate, gilded brass or bronze fittings executed in the Aesthetic style. The slide features two arched handles or supports, each centered by an inset, circular porcelain plaque. These plaques are hand-painted with winged cherubs (putti) seated beside baskets of flowers. The piece utilizes a patented extending mechanism, as confirmed by the scalloped brass tag marked PATENT 5524. A separate rectangular brass plaque identifies the retailer or maker: HOWELL. JAMES & CO / REGENT STREET. LONDON. The Coromandel veneer exhibits a striking, high-contrast tiger-stripe pattern.
Visible length of base section approximately 11 inches (28 cm).
