A World War I-era brass trench art container, constructed from a repurposed shell casing dated 1917. The cylindrical vessel features a hinged lid decorated with a raised floral rosette motif. The exterior body is hand-engraved with various decorative elements including a long-legged bird holding a sprig, floral designs, and a stylized monogram. Significant inscriptions on the body include the names and military units of three individuals: T.W. Marshall Artist’ Rifles., H.H. Marshall R.F.A., and C. Marshall Royal Sussex. The names of battle locations Somme, Ypres, and Cambrai are also engraved within a scroll border. The base of the shell casing displays stamped military production markings including HL, JANR, 17, and 1917.
